Imagine climbing a spiral staircase that was 25,000 steps tall. Such a fete winds me just thinking about it, but try imagining that each of those steps was perfectly placed and deeply engraved with vital information about your existence. As you climb higher, you learn more and more about who you really are and who your ancestors were. Further imagine that this staircase somehow has the ability to split down the middle and duplicate itself exactly. Sound impossible? Actually, we each possess trillions of these staircases inside our bodies called deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA.
The DNA molecule is one of the most complex in all Creation. Scientists are working to crack its carefully encrypted codes. Each DNA molecule contains the equivalent information to what would be contained in 1,000 books with 500 pages each, and every molecule contains the complete building instructions for constructing and operating another you. DNA is the most efficient information storage system known in the universe and its ability to hold data far outstrips even our latest technology. In order to hold the same amount of material in a tiny drop of DNA, you would need 233 3-terabyte hard drives weighing over 300 pounds or 14,000 50-gigabyte Blu-ray discs.
Somehow, six feet of this double helix 25,000 step stairway is tightly packed into each of the 37.2 trillion cells of your body. That’s like stuffing 125 miles of fishing line into a basketball. And every time one of your cells divides, the stairway unzips down the middle at speeds approaching 8,000 rpms and duplicates itself without tangling a single strand. Try that with your fishing reel. Then consider that these DNA staircases are not unique to humans but are found in every living thing on the planet, some with over 2 million steps.
One of the co-discoverers of DNA and a self-proclaimed agnostic, Francis Crick, commented, “An honest man, armed with all knowledge available to us now, could only state that in some sense, the origin of life appears at the moment to be almost a miracle, so many are the conditions which would have had to have been satisfied to get it going.” When confronted with the incredible complexity, Crick could not accept that this molecule “just happened” by random chance, even over the millions of years of supposed evolution. Instead, this Nobel Prize winner, rejecting the possibility of God, went so far as to suggest DNA was sent to earth by aliens and eventually evolved into the life forms we see today (which begs the question of the aliens’ origins). Why would one reject God to embrace aliens? Perhaps to escape accountability to our Creator.
As our scientific knowledge of DNA has mushroomed since Crick’s death, we have discovered even greater complexity and obvious design. This mind-blowing organization confounds many evolutionists who cannot explain this miracle. Perhaps it would behoove them and us to recognize the Great Designer behind the Great Design. Paul says in Romans 1 that God’s invisible qualities are obvious from what He has made so that all humans are without excuse.
No one would presume to declare the Mona Lisa a product of random chance, even given billions of years and to do so would rob Di Vinci of credit he is due. Each DNA molecule is infinitely more complicated than even the most intricate painting AND it lives and replicates itself millions of times over. How anyone can ponder such incredible wonders and deny the existence of a Creator requires more blind faith in evolution than Christians have in their God.
Long before the first electron microscopes and molecular theories, the writer of Hebrews said that God made things that can be seen from those that can’t. And long before that, David declared, “Only the fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” The more we learn about Creation, the more difficult it becomes to remain an atheist or an agnostic. The undeniable evidence demands a verdict and every thinking human must somehow come to grips with the evidence staring us squarely in the face. We may refuse to accept the God of the Bible or consciously war against Him, but to deny the existence of a Divine Creator is becoming increasingly difficult. Why not accept the obvious and worship Him for His endless greatness?
