Indulge me for a few minutes with a thought experiment. Imagine it is 2525 and all that used to be the USA is long gone. Our founders and great leaders are remembered only in history books and blogs as even their statues and monuments have been buried in the rubble of time.
Then one day explorers stumble onto something unique. Although eroded by rain, damaged by freezing and thawing, and overgrown with vines, they discover what appears to be an enormous face staring into the distance. Then they find three others beside it. After clearing away vegetation and debris, they are awed by the four presidents carved into Mt. Rushmore.
Further imagine these explorers then proclaiming that these six-story tall faces were naturally eroded into the rocks over millions of years. Because they deny the existence of any previous civilizations, they eliminate any possibility that these sculptures were man-made.
Such a ridiculous conclusion would discount the hard and dangerous work of those 400 men and women who labored 14 years blasting, chiseling, and forming those massive heads, as well as the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum. It would also have to ignore the tons of rock at the base removed to release those faces. No one with half a brain would declare Mt. Rushmore the product of random earthquakes and millions of years of gradual change.
Now imagine finding such faces with eyes that could actually see, ears that could hear, noses that could breathe, mouths that could speak, and hair that would grow. Such sculptures would be infinitely more complex and require immeasurable ignorance to believe they developed by chance.
And yet, those who hold to Darwinian Evolution do exactly that. Compared to the lifeless busts of these four presidents, even the simplest living cell is enormously more complicated and designed. Micromotors spinning at 10,000 rpms, waste systems, energy factories and more enable tiny cells to function, live, and even reproduce. No sculpture anywhere in the world comes close to the complexity of a single living cell.
But cells are not all we have. Just as our explorers would have to disregard the existence of four such faces side by side, evolutionists must purposefully blind themselves to the way that cells are organized into living structures. Organs such as livers, lungs, tongues, and eyeballs are made of millions of these minute structures that perform highly specialized tasks unique to their individual body part. And all of the organs are further organized into a body that can, unlike Mt. Rushmore’s heads, actually breathe, hear, see, talk, think, act, and grow. Claims that this organization and complexity occurred by random chance suddenly make our future explorers look like geniuses.
G. K. Chesterton rightly commented in his book, Orthodoxy, “Evolution is at war with human thought.” Even a child realizes that Mt. Rushmores don’t just happen without design, purpose, work, and effort. How much more the highly organized functioning of a human body, a stately sequoia, or even a humble earthworm. One has to intentionally disable all human reasoning to believe such a scheme. Even evolutionist Richard Dawkins once said, “Biology is the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.” Yes. They appear that way because they were designed for a purpose by an incredibly intelligent Designer. Only someone who doesn’t want to obey that Designer would claim He doesn’t exist. How insulting for those He created to thumb their noses at His wisdom, power, creativity, and ingenuity.
Dr. Raymond Damadian who invented the MRI machine said that evolution was a “tragic hoax foisted upon mankind,” and that humans, “are creations of a gracious God.” Sadly, he was denied the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine simply because he believed in an all-wise Creator rather than random chance. The next time you see a photo of Mt. Rushmore, allow it to inspire your praise of the One who designed and made you. Blessings, George
