The Chicken or the Egg?

For centuries, people have pondered whether chickens or eggs came first.  If the egg came first, what laid it?  And if the chicken came first, what did she hatch from?  Evolutionists have attempted to solve this problem by claiming all birds came from dinosaurs which also laid eggs, but that only ratchets back several millions of evolutionary years to ask the same question of dinosaurs.

The question is more than academic, however, as its answer involves assumptions about our own origins.  Thinking logically, if the egg came first, then how was it fertilized?  Even if one hen evolved from a dinosaur, there would have to have been a rooster that evolved simultaneously.  Of course, if the chicken came first, then she too had to have had a male to fertilize her eggs.  How can we solve this conundrum?
The best way to answer this question is by examining Genesis 1 where it says that God created birds and enabled them to reproduce according to their kinds, indicating that He made both rooster and hen.  For those who trust the Bible as God’s Word, the answer is given in the very first chapter.

But this chicken and egg question also raises many other issues of co-dependent organs and processes throughout creation.  Take your circulatory system for example.  If evolution is true, did your heart evolve before your blood vessels, lungs, and blood itself?  Or did your blood come first and then wait thousands of years until a system accidentally happened into existence to get it to every cell in your body?

These challenges are even greater when we consider that many living organisms possess hearts, lungs, blood, and vessels which means the same systems must have evolved separately hundreds or thousands of times to give us what we find throughout creation.  Now that takes faith!  Especially when there’s no evidence for it.  There is no fossil evidence for one specie changing into another or for the gradual development of major organs or processes.

Another example is the human eye.  If the incredibly complex organ for vision evolved before the optic nerve or even the brain’s ability to interpret what it sees, the eye would have disappeared long ago and the converse is also true.  And yet evolutionists claim that the eye evolved independently over 40 times according to the University of Massachusetts Medical School!  The odds of it happening just once are beyond statistical probability!

Instead of recognizing that one Creator made them all using similar designs, some simply say it’s an evolutionary mystery of DNA.  That’s a convenient argument but raises more questions than it solves.  DNA itself is the most complex molecule known to humankind with each individual molecule holding as much information as is found in 1000 books each with 500 pages.

Imagine quarts of ink mysteriously forming in the sky from nothing by nothing, then falling to earth (which also formed from nothing by nothing), arranging itself on random pages into letters, periods, sentences, capitals, and page numbers all of which made logical sense.  And then, astoundingly, all these pages somehow bound themselves together in order into one volume and shrunk itself down to fit inside the nucleus of a human cell.  Finally imagine that book being able to replicate itself exactly many millions of times over.

No one in their right mind would believe such a thing would ever just happen without an author and a publisher.  Order never arises from disorder, complexity never comes from simplicity, and life never evolves from non-life unless something acts upon it.  DNA is infinitely more complex than any book and yet many believe and teach that it only happened into existence by random chance.

This Sunday and Monday, we will explore the evidence for creation, evolution, Noah’s flood, dinosaurs, fossils and more.  This will occur on March 24 at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00am at Antioch Church of the Brethren and at 6:30pm at Shenandoah Community Fellowship and again at 6:30pm on Monday evening back at Antioch.  The events are free and open to the public and all are welcome.

We may refuse to accept God but to deny the existence of a Divine Designer is becoming increasingly difficult.  Come and examine the evidence to make a fully informed decision to be able to answer the age old question regarding chickens and eggs and many more besides.  Blessings, George
